Penalty request against 6 women journalists

ISTANBUL - The prosecutor, who presented its opinion on 6 women journalists who were tried for their action in support of Free Press employees, requested punishment.
 
The third hearing of the case filed against 6 women journalists who were beaten and detained in Kadıköy, Istanbul, on April 29, 2023, in order to protest the detention operations carried out against Free Press employees, was held at the 22nd Criminal Court of First Instance of the Anatolian Courthouse. Journalists who were tried on the charge of "violating the law on meetings and demonstrations" did not attend the hearing. Media and Legal Studies Association (MLSA) Co-Director Veysel Ok, one of the association's lawyers, Emine Özahasar, and the lawyers of the journalists who are on trial without arrest attended the hearing.
 
PROSECUTOR ASKED FOR PUNISHMENT
 
Presenting its opinion, the prosecutor noted that the journalists did not disperse despite warnings. The prosecutor requested punishment for journalists Serpil Ünal, Yadigar Aygün, Pınar Gayip, Eylem Nazlıer, Zeynep Kuray and Esra Soybir. The lawyers then took the floor and requested time to defend against the opinion.
 
THE HEARING HAS BEEN POSTPONED
 
The court postponed the hearing to October 31 for the lawyers to make their defense against the opinion.
