Aysegul Dogan: Parliament Speaker should take responsibility for commission

ANKARA – Aysegul Dogan, spokesperson for the Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party, called on Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş to take initiative in establishing a parliamentary commission.

During a press conference held at the party headquarters following the Party Assembly and Central Executive Board meetings, Aysegu Dogan referred to Turkish Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chair Devlet Bahceli’s recent call for a parliamentary commission and reminded that DEM Party had previously made a similar proposal.

CALL TO PARLIAMENT SPEAKER

“We invited the Parliament Speaker to take initiative months ago, stressing the importance of this issue,” Aysegul Dogan said. Emphasizing that the Kurdish issue cannot be separated from Turkey’s democratization, she stated that all political parties should contribute to the process with their critiques and proposals.

“We’re talking about a parliament with historically high political representation. In such a composition, we said a commission should be discussed, one that not only begins in Parliament but also involves broader segments and dynamics of society. We believe Speaker Kurtulmuş must take responsibility for this,” she added.

‘CONCERNS IN SOCIETY’

“There are many concerns in society, and addressing them is one of Parliament’s primary duties. This matter must be approached above all political interests,” Aysegul Dogan said, criticizing calculations based on party advantage and callin for a comprehensive and sincere approach. She said, “Turkey must break away from this mindset.”

‘WE WILL EXPLAIN AND ORGANIZE THE PROCESS’

Aysegul Dogan noted that the party will increase community outreach through house visits and public meetings and said: “We will both explain and organize this process. It is fragile and carries risks. We aim to not only minimize those risks but eliminate them altogether by building social support.”

Commenting on the debated 10th Judicial Reform Package, Aysegul Dogan mentioned that DEM’s parliamentary group leaders had already discussed the matter with the Ministry of Justice and issued a detailed statement, which was later echoed by the Ministry itself.

‘PKK AND ÖCALAN ARE THE INTERLOCUTORS’

Asked about President Erdogan’s remarks suggesting that disarmament includes the YPG, Aysegul Dogan responded, “As I have said before, the direct interlocutor to such a question is the PKK. The organization and its leader, Mr Öcalan, can address issues concerning disarmament.”

Regarding the proposed new constitution, Aysegul Dogan stressed the need for a democratic and peaceful constitutional framework.
