Up to 15 years in prison requested for 19 people in Istanbul Courthouse attack investigation

ISTANBUL - The investigation into the attack on the police checkpoint at the Istanbul Courthouse has been completed. The indictment requested up to 15 years in prison for 19 people.

The investigation into the armed attack on the police checkpoint in front of Gate C of the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan on February 6 has been completed. In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a total of 19 people were listed as "suspects", including Necmiye Birkoç and Nejla Birkoç, the sisters of DHKP-C member Pınar Birkoç, who carried out the attack, as well as 4 people alleged to be on the central committee.
 
In the prepared indictment, it was recorded that on the day of the incident, DHKP-C member Emrah Yayla and Pınar Birkoç were approached by police officers on duty when they approached the D block door of the courthouse, that Birkoç sprayed pepper spray on the faces of the police officers for 2-3 seconds during the attack, that Yayla, who was behind Birkoç, shot the police officer at the time, that when the gun did not fire, he fired again and injured his right foot. It was stated in the indictment that when one of the police officers started running in the direction of the courthouse and the other in the direction of C block, Yayla and Birkoç fired at the police officers running in the direction of C block, and that at this time, a citizen named Dilfiraz Karataş died as a result of the fire opened. The indictment stated that Yayla and Birkoç were killed by the police officers in the guardhouse in front of C block.
 
15-YEAR PRISON REQUEST FOR 19 SUSPECTS
 
In the prepared indictment, it was requested that fugitive suspects Zerrin Sarı, Seher Demir, Musa Aşoğlu, Fehriye Erdal and suspects Necmiye Birkoç, Nejla Birkoç, Ayten Öztürk, Diyar Ersoy, Elif Ersoy, Ercan Güneş, Gamze Eroğlu, Hakan İnci, Hasan Karapınar, Meryem Özsöğüt, Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı, Oktay Kelebek, Seda Şaraldı, Seher Adıgüzel and Ulaş İnci be sentenced to 7 years and 6 months to 15 years in prison each for the crime of “being a member of a terrorist  organization.” On the other hand, a decision was made not to prosecute Emrah Yayla and Pınar Birkoç, who were killed in the action, on charges of “attempting to overthrow the constitutional order,” “deliberate killing,” “damaging public property,” “premeditated killing,” and “being a member of a terrorist organization.”
 
The trial of the suspects will begin on October 31 at the Istanbul 26th High Criminal Court.
