ANKARA - In the 3-month report prepared on 23 prisons in the Central Anatolia Region, it was stated that at least 1,203 violations occurred in prisons.
The Ankara Branch of the Human Rights Association (İHD) announced its April, May and June report on the violations of rights in prisons in the Central Anatolia region at a press conference held at the İHD Headquarters. Nuray Çevirmen, member of İHD Central Executive Board (MYK), lawyer Ümit Can Akbulut, member of Prisons Commission and Halil İbrahim Varlı attended the meeting.
THOUSAND 203 VIOLATIONS IN 3 MONTHS
In the report, it was shared that at least 80 people from 23 prisons in the Central Anatolia Region and at least 10 people from other prisons applied to the İHD, and 1203 rights violations were committed in 23 prisons in a three-month period.
VIOLATIONS OF THE RIGHT TO HEALTH
In the report, it was stated that a total of 13 prisoners in at least 5 prisons took hunger strikes against the violations of rights in the last three months, and that there were at least 234 violations of the right to health in prisons, as far as it was determined. In the report, including the details of the violations regarding the right to health, it was noted that the diet meals of the other prisoners, especially the ill prisoners, were not provided, drugs were given without a detailed examination, the mouths of the prisoners were searched while being taken to the hospital, and therefore the prisoners refused treatment. In addition, the hospital referrals of many prisoners were rejected without justification, often these referrals spread over time and therefore the existing disease progressed, the guards were also included in the meetings with the psychologists of the prisoners, the treatment tools that the prisoners had taken with them in the hospital where they were previously treated were confiscated, and many In addition to the violation, it was stated that the beds in Tokat Type T Prison had not been changed for 10 years, causing various problems.
TORTURE, ILL-TREATMENT, DISHONORABLE CONDUCT…
The report stated that these violations included at least 357 torture, ill-treatment and degrading treatment. Reminding that the Ministry of Justice does not share data on this issue, the report states: “It was learned that A.K., who was held in the Bolu Type F Closed Prison, was exposed to the threat of the Gendarmerie during his transfer to the hospital. It was learned that the prisoners were beaten in the Bolu/Gerede Type L Closed Prison. Room searches are made in a dominant way, and during the searches, the items can be scattered and broken. In High Security and Type S Closed Prisons, prisoners are held in single rooms and taken to the ventilation in a separate unit for 1-1.5 hours a day.
