Lawyer Gültekin: The repealing of the law no. 6284 legitimizes violence

BATMAN - Condemning the People's Alliance's request to repeal the law numbered 6284, lawyer Sümeyye Gültekin Aykut said: "Repealing the law clearly means legitimizing violence."

Following the withdrawal of power from the Istanbul Convention in Turkey, this time before the Presidential and general elections to be held on May 14, the "Protection of the Family and Violence Against Women" numbered 6284, which was adopted by the Parliament on March 8, 2012 and entered into force on March 20, 2012, was targeted. While the election promises of the People's Alliance to repeal the law caused controversy, women's organizations condemned  these initiatives.

Evaluating the issue, Batman Bar Association Women's Rights Center Vice President Sümeyye Gültekin Aykut stated that the request to repeal the law means legitimizing violence against women, and said that the attacks on women's gains intensified after the abolition of the Istanbul Convention. Stating that male violence continues exponentially, Aykut said: “On March 8, we called women to solidarity with all our excitement; We lost a sister on a day when we cried out to be a part of women's solidarity against body policies that ignore women, violence against women, femicide, all kinds of oppression and discrimination against women. While 2 women were murdered in Batman in March, a woman was seriously injured. T.A. was murdered at the bus stop on the morning of March 8, by her husband, with whom he was in the process of divorce. Again on March 24, Z.A. was killed by her brother. On March 29, Z.U. injured by a religious married man. The abolition of the Istanbul Convention and the Law No. 6284 is to pave the way for all these."

'WE WILL NOT ALLOW'

Emphasizing that the gains from Law No. 6284 are a supra-political issue, Aykut continued: “It is unacceptable that some alliances have set the main goal. All women loudly stated that when the Istanbul Convention was terminated by the President's decree, it would be the turn of Law No. 6284. These outdated discourses show that this election is now the day for women to say 'we were, we are, we will exist'. Repealing the law is clearly justifying violence. As women, we will not give up what we have achieved with our struggle, and we will not let them  touch even a single line of this law, every line of which is based on the knowledge and experience of the women's movement.”
