VAN - Condemning the fact that masculine politics made the gains of women the subject of negotiation while the election preparations were underway, Star Women's Association Manager Meryama Aslan said: "The strengthening of the women's struggle scared both the government and the state."

The AKP government once again targeted the gain of women for their political future. After Turkey's withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, which was the first signatory and an important step in preventing violence against women, with the Presidential Decree, the Law No. 6284 on the Protection of the Family and the Prevention of Violence Against Women, which was accepted as a result of long struggles, and the right to alimony are targeted. While Turkey was preparing for the elections to be held on May 14, the People's Alliance, which sought an alliance, made the law that protects women and children from violence the subject of bargaining.

Among the conditions for the participation of the Re-Welfare Party, which AKP continues to negotiate to join the People's Alliance, were the repeal of Law No. 6284 and the closure of LGBTI+ associations. In Turkey, where at least 3 women lose their lives a day, the gains of women being the subject of bargaining in politics has brought reactions.

Star Women's Association Manager Meryama Aslan made evaluations about the masculine politics carried out over the lives and achievements of women.

THE STRUGGLE OF WOMEN SCARES THE STATE

Stating that even the right of alimony for women is being discussed in today's Turkey, Aslan said: “Politics thinks that 'Women should not be left with a living space'. Laws are lifted. Therefore, the perpetrators think, 'I can do what I want, nothing will happen to me', and thus a legitimate path is opened for them. We will continue to fight against it. The struggle of women now has a conscious mass and that both the government and the state are afraid of it. Women express themselves in all fields. You have your word in every field and nothing will deter us from this effort. We have paid a great price to reach this position and we continue to do so. We will uphold the laws that are the gains of the struggle. Many women apply to the association every day because there are almost no government institutions that women can apply to.”

COMMON STRUGGLE FOR THE GAINS OF WOMEN

Stating that they resisted in an environment where their living spaces were tried to be destroyed, Aslan said: “The state in front of us is a male-dominated state. As a country, we speak freely about what is done to women in Afghanistan and Iran, but the government is also trying to drag the country to a similar administration. Women need to unite against this. Wherever it is, there should be one voice on the basis of rights and freedoms.”
