In the Federated Kurdistan Region, parliamentarians and women's organizations are preparing to make some changes in the laws to prevent violence against women. Women's organizations came together on January 31st to prevent domestic violence and prepare a bill. After this meeting, the Kurdistan Women's Alliance visited the President of the Kurdistan Region and presented a series of proposals for a law to prevent domestic violence. As a result of the women's work, a proposal was submitted to the Parliament.

 

Remziye Abdullah, a member of the Kurdistan Region Women's Coalition, evaluated the bills on the prevention of domestic violence to NUJINHA.

 

Regarding the bill they presented to the Parliament, Remziye Abdullah said, “We discussed the law on the prevention of domestic violence at the meeting. While our organization presented its proposals to the Parliament, the Speaker of the Assembly drew attention to the amendment of the law and its re-enactment. Now the enactment of the law depends only on the parliamentarians. This time, the parliament can discuss the law for it to pass." 

 

Şilan Sadiq, a member of the Kurdistan Women's Alliance, said, "We presented some law proposals to the Speaker of the Parliament and the chairperson promised that she would pass this proposal to the relevant MPs. It will support and assist us in the success of our project within the framework of the law.”

 

Article 8 of the Special Law on the Prevention of Domestic Violence against Women in the Kurdistan Region was adopted in 2011 but was not implemented. Parliamentarians and women's organizations are trying to reform the law.
