ANKARA - Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey said PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan should be released and called for the resumption of negotiations.

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey evaluated the messages sent to the public through the attorneys of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to the Mesopotamia Agency (MA).

Sinn Féin West Belfast MP Paul Maskey said:

"The recent announcement of the conclusion of the hunger strike by Kurdish political prisoners and activists, demanding an end to the isolation of imprisoned Kurdish political leader Abdullah Ocalan, is welcome.

"While Abdullah Ocalan has been allowed visits from his legal representatives recently, the policy of isolation against him on the Imrali prison island needs to end completely.

"Sinn Féin calls on the Turkish Government to release Abdullah Ocalan immediately.

"We also call on the International community to support the demand for a recommencement of negotiations between the Turkish Government and representatives of the Kurdish people.

"Only the establishment of a credible, inclusive conflict resolution process will resolve the political problems in Turkey and bring about a just and lasting peace for all its citizens".
