MERSIN - Aydın Oğuz, a prisoner at Espiye Type L Closed Prison, has been denied hospital treatment for 21 days after breaking his foot.

 

It has emerged that Aydın Oğuz, a prisoner at Giresun’s Espiye L-Type Closed Prison, has not been taken to hospital for 21 days after breaking his foot while exercising. Oğuz broke his foot while exercising on July 19. During his weekly phone call with his family, he described the situation and the violations he had been subjected to. He said prisoners alerted prison staff, after which he was taken to the prison infirmary. Following initial treatment there, he was scheduled to be transferred to hospital. However, he said soldiers insisted on an oral cavity search, and that he was not taken to hospital after refusing to comply with the demand.

 

Oğuz’s family said he told the soldiers: “If this is about security, I coughed next to you and I can drink water next to you. But I do not consent to this oral cavity search.” The family said that Oğuz returned to the prison infirmary the following day for further treatment, where the doctor issued an “urgent referral” for his broken foot. However, when he was brought to the gate to be taken to hospital, the transfer was once again blocked after soldiers insisted on an oral cavity search. According to his family, Oğuz’s injured foot has been wrapped in a bandage since the day he broke it, and he has only been given a walking stick.

 

During a phone call with his family, Oğuz stated he had still not been taken to hospital and said: “They gave me a cream for my broken foot during the first few days, but once it ran out, they did not give me any more. The swelling has gone down a little, but I am still in pain.”
