RIHA - An armed attack on a vocational school in Sêwereg (Siverek) left at least 16 people injured. The perpetrator, a former student, is reported to have taken his own life. The motives behind the attack remain unclear.
At least 16 people were injured in a shooting at a vocational school in the district of Siverek in Urfa province on Tuesday morning. According to official statements, the injured include four teachers, ten students, one police officer, and a school cafeteria worker.
The governor, Hasan Şıldak, stated that five of the injured sustained more serious wounds and were transferred to a hospital in Urfa. The others with injuries were treated locally in Siverek.
The attacker is believed to be a 19-year-old former student. Reports indicate that he barricaded himself inside the school building after the attack and refused to surrender. “The perpetrator was cornered by police inside the building and died after shooting himself,” Governor Şıldak said.
Following the shooting, students were evacuated from the building, while special police units were deployed and secured the area. The motives behind the attack are still unclear. Authorities have announced a comprehensive investigation.
EGITIM SEN DELEGATION WILL GO TO SIVEREK
A delegation, including Kemal Irmak, General Secretary of the Education and Science Workers’ Union (Eğitim Sen), will visit Sêwêreg tomorrow regarding the incident.
The delegation is expected to make a statement outside the secondary school where the attack took place, following their investigations in the district.
