NEWS CENTER - In the statements made for ill prisoners Mehmet Edip Taşar, İbrahim Tekin and Fırat Nebioğlu, a warning was made that "their lives are at risk".

The protests and activities regarding the ill prisoners, who are not released despite their severe health problems, continue. Human Rights Association (IHD) and Freedom for İll Prisoners Initiative continued their weekly protests today. In statements made in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara, attention was drawn to the situation of ill prisoners.

68 YEAR OLD TAŞAR'S CONDITION

IHD Istanbul Branch Prison Commission organized the 640th of their weekly protest in front of the association's building in Beyoğlu.  This week's protest drew attention to the health condition of 68-year-old Mehmet Edip Taşar, who is in Marmara Type L Prison No 5. During the demonstration, photographs of ill prisoners were carried and banners reading "Treatment is a right and cannot be prevented" and "Release ill prisoners" were held. They also chanted "Treatment is a right and cannot be prevented", "Release ill prisoners", "Release Mehmet Edip Taşar" and "Isolation kills, solidarity keeps alive".

Mukaddes Şamiloğlu said that ill prisoners are left to their fate. Reminding that Şefik Esen, who was also on IHD's list of ill prisoners, died on June 20 and Yıldırım Han died on June 27, Şamiloğlu stated that these deaths were "murders".

Pointing out that prisoner Mehmet Edip Taşar had two heart attacks in prison, Şamiloğlu said: "He suffers from heart failure, arrhythmia, hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate, decreased vision and insomnia. He can only move with a wheelchair due to his inability to walk. He can do even his needs such as self-care and nutrition with the help of others."

Stating that Taşar has had 17 angioplasties in total, "He may experience a new heart attack at any moment. Sometimes he cannot get out of his bed for days, and from time to time he can be lifted up and walked around for 10 minutes with the support of his friends. Taşar, who has to spend 3 days a week in the hospital due to his illnesses and is taken to and from the hospital in a wheelchair, has been referred to the Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) 3 times due to his severe and chronic illnesses, but his demands for postponement of execution were not met. A new application was made to the ATK and the process is ongoing" Şamiloğlu said.

TEKIN'S HEALTH CONDITION IS SERIOUS

IHD Izmir Branch Prison Commission organized the 292nd protest of the action they organize every 2 weeks. IHD members and many people came together in front of Konak Eski Sümerbank. "İll prisoners are dying. Don't be silent, don't be a party to the crime" banner was unfurled. This week's statement drew attention to the situation of İbrahim Tekin (66) in Izmir Şakran Prison. The statement also expressed condolences for Şefik Esen, who was arrested and died last year at the age of 36 despite his chronic illnesses.

IHD executive Ahmet Çiçek reminded that Tekin was tried by the State Security Court in 1994 and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1995. Çiçek said: "Tekin developed permanent illnesses due to the torture he was subjected to during the interrogation phase. He had problems with his testicles during torture and still has these problems. While in prison, he had an umbilical hernia surgery due to torture. Due to sleep apnea, he has to live connected to an oxygen machine before and during sleep, which has become a problem for him. He needs surgery for goiter. He refused the surgery because the hole in his throat would not be closed after the operation. He suffers from kidney failure due to the medication he uses. He is receiving medication for prostate problems."

Çiçek stated that according to the information they received from the family, Tekin suffered from liver failure, heart compression and strain. Çiçek continued as follows: "He also suffers from physical problems due to his advanced age and the unhealthy prison environment. Recently, he has been experiencing dental problems but has not been sent for treatment. This situation causes problems in eating and drinking. İbrahim Tekin, who is about to be released on supervised release, must be treated as soon as possible and released as soon as possible, taking into account his age and illnesses."

The statement ended with a 5-minute silent sit-in.

NEBİOĞLU: HE IS NOT RELEASED DESPITE THE REPORT

Initiative for the Freedom of Ill Prisoners gathered in front of IHD Ankara Branch building on the 512th week of their protests.

İHD Ankara Branch Co-Chair Ömer Faruk Yazmacı drew attention to the situation of Fırat Nebioğlu, a seriously ill prisoner held in Diyarbakır High Security Closed Prison. Yazmacı said that 24-year-old Nebioğlu, who was arrested in 2017, has been in prison for 3.5 years. Stating that Nebioğlu has genetic kidney failure and that he no longer hears because of this, Yazmacı said that Nebioğlu was referred to the Education and Research Hospital on March 7, 2022 and that a report was prepared by a nephrologist stating that "staying in prison poses a serious risk to his life".

Yazmacı said: "Upon this, his application for a stay of execution was submitted to Batman 2nd Assize Court, but this request was rejected. His disease has progressed due to the prison's lack of hygiene and sterility. He needs a kidney transplant. However, the doctors say that it is still risky for him to stay in prison and that there will be no suitable conditions for surgery in this way, so the surgery cannot be performed."

Yazmacı pointed out that Nebioğlu was referred to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institution (ATK) on March 15, 2022, but was given the report "He can stay in prison" without being examined.

Yazmacı stated that Nebioğlu was referred to Batman Training and Research Hospital on March 30, 2022 and was told by the doctor that both of his kidneys had failed. Stating that Nebioğlu, who is on dialysis 3 days a week, is kept in an unhygienic environment and that it is not possible to perform a transplant under such conditions, Yazmacı said: "For this reason, we demand that he be released as soon as possible since his life is in danger and he needs to be treated in a more sterile environment for a kidney transplant."
