ANKARA - DEM Party Law and Human Rights Commission demanded closure of Type Y, S and high security prisons, which are described as "Well-type" and where isolation is increased.
People's Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Law and Human Rights Commission Co-Speakers Sevda Çelik Özbingöl and Öztürk Türkdoğan made a statement regarding the closure of Y,S and high security prisons.
In the statement, it was noted that according to the data of the Ministry of Justice, there are 329 thousand 151 prisoners in Turkey as of May 2, 2024, and that the prison models in question have the feature of decaying and destroying the prisoners. It was also informed that there are a total of 43 "Well-type" prisons in Turkey, 22 of which are high security, 14 of which are Type Y and 7 of which are Type S.
ONE AND A HALF HOUR VENTILATION PER DAY
The statement continued: “Type Y and S and high security prisons, which have been built recently, are new types of prisons where isolation and violation of rights are increased. In these prisons, prisoners are held in single or triple cells. In addition, there is no ventilation section and the prisoners are taken out for ventilation only 1 and half hours a day at different times so that they do not see each other.
CEMİL KURT AND ALİŞAN GÜL ARE ON HUNGER STRIKE
Cemil Kurt and Alişan Gül, who are in Erzurum Dumlu Prison No. 1, have been on hunger strike since March 11, demanding the closure of these prisons, known publicly as "Well-type" prisons, and their transfer to prisons close to their families. Nurettin Kaya, who is in Bolu Type F Prison and whose transfer request was accepted, is on the 223rd day of his death fast for his friends. Kaya, who had difficulty breathing and weighed 40 kilos, had wounds inside his mouth, his feet and hands were swollen, and his pain reached unbearable levels.
ELIMINATE THE ISOLATION SYSTEM
In the current situation, the authorities have not taken any steps for months, disregarding the lives of prisoners whose only request is to be transferred to a prison close to their families, and they insist on arbitrary and unlawful exile.
Urges the Ministry of Justice to immediately accept the request of Cemil Kurt and Alişan Gül to be transferred to a prison close to their families; We call on you to take steps to eliminate the isolation system in Type Y, Type S and high-security prisons and to close such prisons."
