Sydney said: Save Hasankeyf 2019-09-14 16:40:07 NEWS DESK - Kurds and their friends organised an action for the ancient city of Hasankeyf in Sydney. The Democratic Kurdish Community Federation (DKTF) in Australia organised an action in the Town Hall square to say that "it is not too late to save Hasankeyf".   DKTF co-chair Ismet Tastan said that the Turkish state wants to destroy the nature and culture of the Kurds.   Taştan reminded that the 12-thousand years old Hasankeyf, which was cradle of many civilizations, is facing extinction. “At least 300 mounds that have not been excavated yet are under the same threat."   Taştan added that more than 80,000 people in 200 settlements will be displaced as a result of the filling of Ilisu Dam, built on the Tigris River. The dam, he said, will affect neighboring peoples like Iraq.   Peter Boyle, editor of the Socialist Alliance and the Green Left Weekly, said that the UNESCO, the Australian government and international institutions should not remain silent about the destruction of Hasankeyf.
