Argentina: Plaza de Mayo grandmothers identify 130th grandchild 2019-06-12 11:23:38 ANKARA - The Plaza de Mayo grandmothers confirmed in a press conference that they have managed to locate and identify grandson number 130.   The identity of this new grandchild will be disclosed on Thursday with the consent and presence of the person in question.   The hard and tireless work of the organization made up of the mothers of the over 30,000 disappeared during the bloody military dictatorship that ruled in Argentina from 1976 to 1983, supported by the US, has so far managed to locate and identify 130 of the more than 500 children born in the clandestine prisons of that time. Among the grandchildren identified is that of the President of the organisation, the emblematic Estela de Carlotto.   The mothers of the localized grandchildren gave birth while in illegal detention and torture centers, when they were considered "disappeared", and the newborns were immediately taken from them and given up for adoption, often to members of the same Armed Forces or their collaborators.   The tireless search of the grandmothers for their grandchildren has been supported by the creation, in the mid-1980s, from a national DNA bank specifically aimed at helping in the identification of the grandchildren.   The insistence of the grandmothers also got that the theft of babies by the   Armed Forces would be considered a crime of continued abduction and a crime against humanity, to which legally the so called “End point” amnesty cannot be applied. This special Amnesty to put a final point to the dark period of dictatorship was  approved by the Government of former President Carlos Menen, and has also allowed the condemnation of numerous officers of the Armed Forces, including some of the top positions of the Army during the dictatorship.
